Sales incentive travel is a trip earned by hitting a defined performance target — a quota, a growth number, a product mix — rather than given as a perk. The trip itself is the reward, and the qualification period is what drives the behaviour. Most programmes run on an annual cycle, with the destination announced early so the reward is visible for the whole year people are chasing it.

Most programmes land between $3,500 and $5,500 per person for Caribbean and Mexico destinations, and $6,000 to $9,000 for Europe, Hawaii or long-haul. That figure typically covers air, four or five nights at a resort, all meals, group activities and on-site management. Group size moves the number more than destination does — a group of 150 buys leverage a group of 20 cannot.

Nine to twelve months before departure for a first programme, six months minimum if you’re repeating one. The constraint is rarely our availability — it’s resort space. Desirable properties in peak season contract group blocks 12 to 18 months out, so an early start is what gets you the destination you actually want rather than the one still available.

Ten to 500 attendees. Below 25 we usually recommend an individual travel reward instead, because small groups lose the buying power that makes a group programme cost-effective. Above 300 the planning shifts substantially — charter flights, multiple properties, staggered arrivals — and that’s work we’ve run since 2003.

In the US, employer-paid incentive travel is generally treated as taxable income to the employee, and many companies gross up the award so the winner doesn’t take a tax hit on a prize they earned. The specifics depend on programme structure and whether the trip includes a genuine business component. We’ll flag the questions to ask, but your tax advisor makes the call — we don’t give tax advice.
